We’ve had on some of the leading lawyers in the country on many of our Media Mayhem episodes. We have them on to talk about the cases making news in the county and how they are covered by the mainstream and tabloid media. We use these experts in the legal field to discuss how handling the media is a big part of their job when defending or prosecuting cases that are of great interest to the public. We’ve had on a number of very influential and respected attorneys on the show including first amendment specialist Ted Boutrous. Ted Boutrous is a lawyer who has represented many journalists as well as media companies when they are under attack by the government or other corporate interests. Boutrous, who is a partner at Gibson Dunn law firm, has helped many journalists protect their sources and publish stories that provide an important check to power. Our show provides a forum in which lawyers like Ted Boutrous can discuss why they help journalists protect their sources, why it’s important to provide media companies with good counsel when issues like national security are at stake and why the media serves an important role in our democracy.
We’ve also had on a number of very well known criminal defense attorneys discussing how they managed to provide their high profile clients a good defense despite negative coverage that could have potentially impacted their right to a fair child. We’ve had on Tom Mesereau discussing how he managed to get Michael Jackson a fair trial in Santa Barbara when the singer was charged with sexual abuse. Mesereau talked about his strategy with the media, how stories about his trial were leaked to the press and why he rarely commented on daily events at trial. Harland Braun visited the show to talk about how he influenced potential jurors in the Robert Blake case by “educating” them about the victim, Bonnie Lee Bakeley. Braun also talked with me about representing unpopular defendants like one of the officers in the Rodney King police beating trial–and getting that officer acquitted despite public calls for a conviction and the highly charged climate in the city following the Los Angeles riots. I also talked with Lindsay Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Chapman, about how the public and the tabloid media wanted Lohan to go to prison and the mistaken belief that celebrities are given a free ride in the justice system. The show also had on prosecutor to the stars, John Lynch, who spoke about what it’s like to be a prosecutor in a town like Los Angeles where there is great media interest in any case involving even minor celebrities. Mr. Lynch talked with me about his years as Chief Deputy District Attorney and the pressures of making sure all defendants are given a fair shake in the justice system, including celebrities.
Media Mayhem is a place where viewers can catch a glimpse behind the scenes of how lawyers deal with high profile matters and clients and how they attempt to make the system work and educate the public on the truth about their cases. In a world obsessed with celebrity justice, Media Mayhem is probably the only place viewers can go to hear what really happened in some of the most famous trials of our time.
