Number 10: Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.
Let’s start out with one feud between musicians that literally came out for the whole WORLD to see…Nicki Minaj vs. Mariah Carey. Ring the bell!
Ok, so this didn’t happen on an awards show, or in some recording studio, this actually happened on American Idol. You see, before the shutdown and the reboot, American Idol was struggling in terms of both ratings, and judges. Two of the mainstay judges, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, had left. And so they tried to fix this by bringing in other “big name” judges. And by Season 12, they did another cycle, bringing in Carey and Minaj. But they clearly didn’t put them to the test before putting them on camera. Because once it went on live, the two went into it heavy and hard.
Part of it was because of Minaj’s personality, and others were caused by Carey not liking what Minaj was saying. They battled repeatedly on camera, and apparently it got even more intense back stage. It got so heated that by the end of that season, both of them left, and the downfall of American Idol continued.
And now it’s back, and thankfully, with judges that actually get along.
Number 9: Michael Jackson and Prince.
This is actually a feud that you might not have known about. For Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, but Prince was an artist all his own. But where their rivalry started was actually one of sales.
In 1982, they each released a big album, 1999 from Prince, and from Michael Jackson…Thriller. Oh yeah. Needless to say, Thriller won that battle. But Prince got the next one with Purple Rain, and this got Michael’s attention, and he started going to some Prince concerts just to check out the guy and see what he was up again.
But where the feud really escalated was when Michael actually asked Prince to be a part of some of his work. Including the 1985 ensemble classic, “We Are The World”, and even be in the music video for “Bad” (which is still considered one of his best videos). But Prince refused both times.
The bad feelings grew from there, and though there were attempts to make peace, it never happened. And both of them are gone from the world now.
Number 8: Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Oh boy, here’s another case of two very strong leading ladies doing what they do best, and then getting caught up in each others business because of it. This all started early in Lady Gaga’s career, specifically when she released a track called “Born This Way” in 2011. When people heard it, they thought it was great, but, it also sounded somewhat familiar. To some, it actually sounded like a song Madonna had made…in 1989. The song in question was “Express Yourself”, and Madonna, too, felt that it was a basic copy and paste job, and she wasn’t happy.
So, when she went on tour after the song was released, she decided to mix the two songs together in a mash up, and sang it as one song just to stick it to her.
“It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue.”
Gaga wasn’t amused though and, in fact, she was very upset with Madonna over this act and, later on in a documentary, she addressed just how upset she was about the incident:
“No matter how much respect I have for her as a performer, I could never wrap my head around the fact that she wouldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that I was reductive or whatever,” she said.
Number 7: Simon and Garfunkel.
As you’ve no doubt seen, it’s very rare indeed for a musical group, duo, or trio to stay together throughout their career. And for the honest-to-goodness friends Simon and Garfunkel, theirs was a separation brought on by jealousy, greed, and betrayal. Art Simon and Paul Garfunkel were two incredibly talented singers and writers. Their songs were full of meaning, and had really catchy beats, which is why they were so popular for so long. But things started to fall apart when Simon signed a solo deal behind Garfunkel’s back, making the betrayal very deep when it came to light.
Then, Garfunkel had a movie role that took a very long time to film, cutting into their music making. So by the time the two got back together, they could barely stand the sight of each other. Which led to their separation after their classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water” album.
