Debate Moderators for the 2020 Presidential Debates | QT Politics

Meet the moderators for the 2020 election presidential debates. Donald Trump and Joe Biden will face off in a series of three presidential debates for the 2020 election, and their running mates, Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, will also spar in a Vice Presidential debate.

Setting the tone for each of these four events will be the debate moderators:

Chris Wallace, Anchor of Fox News Sunday
Susan Page, Washington Bureau Chief of USA Today
Steve Scully, Senior Executive Producer and Political Editor at C-SPAN Networks, and
Kristen Welker, Co-Anchor of Weekend TODAY, and White House Correspondent for NBC News

While the candidates certainly take their political fortunes into their own hands during the debates, the moderators have a significant role in shaping the tone and content of these events. They are entrusted to enforce the rules and time constraints of the debates, and most significantly, they introduce the issues at play, and pose questions that the candidates must answer. Exactly how they frame topics and questions has the power to shape the perspectives of viewers: because moderators are positioned as apparently neutral referees, their biases are likely to be missed by a general audience—the perspectives implicit in their questions and framing of issues might easily be taken as unadulterated, objective fact by the majority of viewers.

It is therefore unquestionably important to understand, in advance of the debates, who the moderators are.

In this video, I’ll attempt to assemble some valuable information about each of the four journalists tasked with moderating the presidential debate and vice presidential debate, providing enough background to begin to answer the question:

Who are the moderators?

All opinions presented in videos are my own, but yours matter, too. Your thoughts are highly valued, even when you don’t agree. At the heart of every vibrant democracy are ordinary people, engaged in debate over policy and values.
