The Future of the Democratic Party and Politics of the Biden Harris Administration

The Democratic Party won the presidential election and gained majorities in both chambers of Congress. The Democrats appear increasingly divided, however. Politicians such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, who have managed to rally young voters, represent a more left-leaning position than, for example, President Joe Biden.

President Biden’s extensive political platform includes tackling the climate emergency, uniting the country, beating Covid-19, delivering racial justice, and making America the leading force for good in the world.

What political reforms can we expect from the Biden-Harris administration? How is the Democratic Party doing after also gaining majorities in both chambers of Congress? To what an extent is there room for an internal discussion on the future of the Party?

Speakers:
Seth Masket, professor of political science and director of the Center on American Politics at the University of Denver. He is the author of Learning from Loss: The Democrats 2016-2020 (Cambridge University Press, 2020), and his research interests include American politics, political parties, campaigns and elections, polarization and political reform movements

Elizabeth Walentin, founder and CEO of Crimson Clarke, a communications and public affairs agency in Stockholm. She holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School, and has a background working in several Democratic primary and general election campaigns

The webinar was moderated by Ylva Pettersson, programme manager at UI.
