Helen Martini raised orphaned big cat cubs in her home in the 1940s, which led to her become the first female zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo. In 1890, Kate Walker bravely stepped into her husband’s shoes after he died to became the first woman in charge of an offshore lighthouse in 19th century New York Harbor. Both of these extraordinary women didn’t intentionally strive to be firsts in their fields. Instead, they found jobs that they put their hearts into and nothing was going to deter them from doing what they loved. Candace Fleming is the acclaimed author of numerous books for children, including Ben Franklin’s Almanac, an ALA Notable Book and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults; as well as Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!; Gabriella’s Song; and When Agnes Caws; all ALA Notable Books. She lives in a suburb of Chicago.

Elizabeth Spires is a critically acclaimed poet and has written several books for children, including The Mouse of Amherst. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland, where she teaches at Goucher College.
