Bihar’s political drama, Gadkari’s ‘yes sir’ remark, freebie culture | Chhota Hafta 393

This week on NL Hafta, Abhinandan Sekhri, Jayashree Arunachalam, Raman Kirpal, and Anand Vardhan of Newslaundry are joined by author and Centre for the Study of Developing Societies professor Sanjay Kumar.

They discuss the political crisis in Bihar caused by Nitish Kumar breaking the alliance between his Janata Dal United and the Bharatiya Janata Party. “There was a buildup since the assembly election in 2020 when Chirag Paswan contested against Nitish Kumar. Nitish has been angry ever since, he was just hiding it,” Sanjay says. Anand calls Nitish “a craftsman politician with an emotionless politics, someone who knows what he is doing”.

The conversation then shifts to union minister Nitin Gadkari’s recent remark that bureaucrats should just say “yes sir” and implement what ministers tell them to. The panel also discuss the so-called freebie culture.
