The action takes place in the United States after the end of the Civil War. Jack Colgrove is a Union Army soldier who spent some time in captivity. But now he is free and happily rushes home to see his family again. For a long time, he was mistakenly listed among the dead soldiers, which clearly led to confusion. The hero learns with horror that his beloved wife has died. And their children were sent by train to the West among other orphans. The man goes after them, wanting to find them. But the pursuit will not be easy, because the post-war territories are clearly not a very calm place. Along with the veteran is a company of Native Americans and a charming and courageous slave who longs for freedom and independence.
