Amal and George Clooney celebrated the people who risked incarceration or physical harm in their “fight for justice”, at the inaugural Albie Awards in New York on Thursday (September 29).

The couple created the awards to draw attention to people who they said were “really doing the work that we need in the world”.

“Journalists who are saying, I’m willing to go to jail for 85 years – Maria Ressa. And she’s here right now. She’s going to go back in a couple of days. And she’s facing 85 years in jail for doing her job,” said George Clooney.

“All of our awardees are on the frontlines of the fight for justice… they’re doing amazing work… we are hoping that by putting them on a stage here tonight, we can shine a protective light on them,” added Amal Clooney.

Many of the Clooneys’ celebrity friends attended the event including Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Cindy Crawford.
