The war in Ukraine has taken on an existential dimension for the European Union. It has awoken Europe from its geopolitical slumber and brought to the forefront the question of its future composition: the European neighbourhood now finds itself in a tug-of-war between Russia and the European Union. However, behind Macron’s ambitious promises of a new European Political Community lie a number of unavoidable challenges for Ukraine’s European future. Post-war infrastructural reconstruction, compliance with rule of law demands, and economic harmonisation: the fate of both Europe and Ukraine finds itself faced with a number of challenges and opportunities which our final Elan debate will elucidate.
