The Voice of Mawlai People’ – a conglomeration of youth and social organisations from Mawlai town in Shillong on Saturday decided to observe black flag day on August 15 as a mark of protest against the killing of Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, the former general secretary of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on August 13.
The ex-HNLC leader was killed by police in a likely encounter at his residence at Mawlai Kynton Massar on the wee hours of August 13.
While police have justified the killing as an “act in self-defense”, the social organisations, however, were not convinced with the statement issued by the police department and have demanded the resignation of Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and the police officers and personnel who were involved in the encounter.
Terming the encounter as a “cold-blooded murder by the men in uniform”, the youth organisations have also demanded an independent enquiry to be headed by a retired judge.
