What California’s recall election says about where US politics is headed

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing voters Tuesday over a decision that will see him either remain in office, or potentially see the state under new leadership in the state’s recall election vote.

Residents have two questions before them: should he keep his job, or, if not, who should take on the role? Republicans ignited the recall, getting millions of signatures from people angry with Newsom’s policies, especially on the topic of COVID-19 mandates.

Turnout will be key, especially in a Democrat-leaning state and could in turn give some indication whether the party will be able to keep hold of Congress in the 2022 midterms. Reggie Cecchini has more on the recall and what it means for U.S. politics as a whole.
